About Unity in Action

A Yearlong Commitment to Understanding and Addressing Oppression

At the core of addressing oppression lies the understanding that the experience of being oppressed—whether due to race, religion, gender, or any other social identity—is more alike than different. The emotions that accompany oppression—fear, hatred, resentment, and being ‘othered’—are familiar to anyone who has faced discrimination. Rather than focusing on what separates us, we must unite around our shared humanity and common struggles.

In 2024, we launched Unity in Action, a year-long themed program dedicated to exploring the root causes of oppression and fostering collective action toward greater equity and inclusion. This year, the program places a strong emphasis on combating Islamophobia and anti-Semitism, beginning with a powerful Chats for Change series. These open, facilitated conversations will create space for learning, reflection, and dialogue on the impact of these specific forms of oppression, while highlighting their intersectionality with other systems of injustice.

Throughout the year, Unity in Action will continue to engage students, staff, and faculty in addressing these critical issues, promoting empathy, understanding, and mutual support. Together, we will work toward building a community that actively resists hate, fosters solidarity, and embraces the dignity and humanity of all people.
