About Curriculum Clinic

The Curriculum Clinic uses a scaffolded learning design to develop the capacity of course and clerkship directors to create inclusive learning environments and course content grounded in anti-racist pedagogy.

What’s anti-racist pedagogy?

Anti-racist pedagogy is an educational approach that seeks to challenge and dismantle racism within teaching and learning environments. It involves integrating principles and practices that promote racial equity, inclusion, and justice. This pedagogy aims to create a learning environment where all students, particularly those from marginalized racial backgrounds, can thrive. It emphasizes critical examination of power dynamics, historical and systemic inequalities, and the incorporation of diverse perspectives and voices into the learning environment.

Key elements of anti-racist pedagogy include:

  • Critical Reflection: Encouraging both educators and students to critically examine their own biases and the impact of systemic racism.
  • Inclusive Curriculum: Designing and delivering curriculum content that represents diverse racial and cultural perspectives.
  • Equitable Practices: Implementing teaching strategies and assessment methods that address and accommodate the diverse needs of students.
  • Empowerment and Agency: Supporting students in developing their own voices and agency to challenge racism and advocate for justice.

Curriculum Clinic 101

This foundational workshop series guides course and clerkship directors in critically assessing their curriculum through a self-assessment tool, focusing on three key domains: teacher, learner, and content. Participants will engage in three interactive workshops that explore the history of scientific racism and the biomedical model, examine current teaching practices in medical education, and explore alternative strategies to actively address racism and bias. This series fosters a deeper understanding of how to create more inclusive, equitable learning environments in medical education.

Curriculum Clinic 102

A year-long workshop series designed for course and clerkship directors to develop skills to promote an anti-oppressive learning environment.
